JOE Allan grabbed the annual Bury Comets senior club championship with his fifth victory of the competition in race 17 to head off the challenge from Will Owen and James Elston.

Allan’s two rivals went to a tie-break for the final placings after finishing tied on 18 points.

Owen won the toss to get the preferred starting position and held his advantage to claimed second spot.

There were three other titles up for grabs, competed for by younger riders, right down to siblings Hermione, aged five, and Duncan Whalley, six.

Luke Wood finished with a maximum 16 points to claim the youngest age group, clinching the title in race seven when he beat off the challenge of Jack Brayshaw and Zack Thacker, who finished second and third overall.

There were also maximum scores for David Miller and Adam Turnbull, who won the other two titles in a fantastic day’s racing at Goshen, despite the soggy weather.

The only disappointment on the day was victory for Sheffield, who won their final Northern League Division Two match to pip Bury’s second team to the title.
