BURY boss Kevin Blackwell has reminded new first-choice keeper Brian Jensen that he “owes him one” after handing the Danish stopper the number one jersey following the departure of Trevor Carson.

High-earner Carson, who had a move to Bradford fall through as Blackwell bid to balance the books in the close season, yesterday joined Portsmouth on a three-month loan.

Summer signing Rob Lainton is out injured with a fractured shoulder, so it will fall to 38-year-old Jensen to take the place between the sticks at home to Newport County tomorrow.

And, after playing an instrumental role for Burnley in victory against Kevin Blackwell’s Sheffield United side in the 2009 Championship play-off final, the Bury boss is adamant it is now payback time.

“He owes me one because he stopped me getting in the Premier League,” said Blackwell, through gritted teeth. He had an outstanding game for Burnley in the play-off final against Sheffield United.

“So listen, he owes me and this would be a nice place for him to pay it back.”

Blackwell has every confidence the veteran keeper still has it in him to live up to the challenge, despite only playing once, in a 2-1 defeat at Port Vale in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, since his transfer deadline day move to Bury.

And he also moved to dispel any concerns he had burned his bridges with 25-year-old Carson, who could still return to Gigg Lane in January if his loan move to Fratton Park does not work out.

“As one door shuts another one opens,” he said.

“Brian Jensen has come here, he has worked very hard and his opportunity has arrived now.

“He looked quite accomplished at Port Vale, and Brian will call on all his experience.

“With regard to Trevor, the chairman is still looking at the finances of the football club. We know the cost last season really was the heavy wages of a number of players, which killed the club.

“It had nothing to do with Trevor’s ability or anything. He’s a great lad, an absolutely first-class professional, and it was a purely financial decision.

“It is a 93-day emergency loan, so that takes him through to January.”

Blackwell will have the services of new left-back Jordan Mustoe to call upon tomorrow after snapping up the 22-year-old defender on a month’s loan from Wigan on Tuesday.

He could also recall forwards Tope Obadeyi and Marlon Jackson, who recovered from injury to score for the reserves in a 4-1 win at Burnley on Wednesday.
