TREVOR Carson’s fears he could still be on his way out of Gigg Lane - despite being recalled to the starting line-up - have been allayed by manager Kevin Blackwell.

The Bury boss says he wants a settled ship after such a busy transfer window and confirmed he would not be looking to loan players into or out of the club for the next four to six weeks.

“I don’t think it is just the fans who have been made dizzy by the number of new faces arriving at Gigg Lane this summer,” said Blackwell, who made 25 signings in three months.

“I think the players have been a bit taken aback by it as well, so I want everything to calm down and to let them feel comfortable in their surroundings.

“We always have the loan window to fall back on, if needed. But I want to see which of my players rise to the challenge and who maybe tail off a bit.

“I need to give each one of them that chance.”

That should be music to Carson’s ears after what he admits has been an unsettling summer.

The 25-year-old goalkeeper is one of only four players remaining from last season, but, as one of the highest earners, had been told he could leave the club.

It looked as if the former Sunderland player was on his way to Bradford in the summer, with Blackwell tentatively announcing his departure.

But the Yorkshire League One outfit pulled the plug on the deal, leaving Carson in limbo.

“I went up and spoke to Bradford, and, to be honest, they were quite unprofessional in the way they dealt with it,” he said.

“I think all parties presumed I had gone. I shook hands with the gaffer here and he wished me all the best, that’s how close it was.

“He was more surprised than anyone to see me the next morning – happy or not, I don’t know.

“It was a good deal for all parties, everybody was happy, but I’m here, I’m professional enough and big enough that, if I’m selected, I will give my all.”

Carson lost his first-team place to former Bolton Wanderers stopper Rob Lainton at the start of the season.

But he made an unexpected return for the recent 4-1 win at home to Cheltenham after Lainton suffered a shoulder injury and retained his place for last Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Rochdale, despite the deadline-day signing of former Burnley keeper Brian Jensen.

After making a few decent saves to keep Bury in the match at Spotland, Carson should be the number one pick for Saturday’s trip to Fleetwood Town, but the young keeper is not counting his chickens.

“I think it still stands with the gaffer – if someone comes in for me I think that would be enough to let me go as it frees up the wage bill,” said Carson.

“So I’ve got to be on my toes constantly, but I thrive on that sort of challenge.”
