THE two letters in the Bury Times (October 19) from two people across the political spectrum, on the subject of the proposed closure of Ward 30 at Fairfield General Hospital, show how strong and deep is the feeling in Bury regarding the attempt by the Pennine Acute Trust, to solve its financial problems at the expense of 27 old people.

My phone and my emails tell me that the trust has a fight on its hands if the proposed closure goes ahead.

At the present time, the opposition has won a respite in that the trust has agreed to postpone' the closure in order to consult with affected stakeholders and these stakeholders should include commissioning PCTs , affected local authorities, carer and user groups, and the Patient and Public Involvement Forum'.

This is, to my mind, as a result of the massive build-up of opposition to the proposal.

During the eight-week period of consultation, the opposition will not be idle, we shall be preparing for the next step in the fight to KEEP WARD 30 OPEN.
