POURING rain failed to dampen spirits at the fifth annual Bury Fun Run.

Over 150 runners of all ages and abilities took part in the five-mile race on Sunday to raise hundreds of pounds for Bury Hospice.

They set off from the Bolholt Country Park Hotel, in Walshaw Road, cheered on by Bury boxer Scott Quigg, the Mayor Of Bury, Cllr Joan Grimshaw, and her consort, husband Paul.

Taking first place was 15-year-old Ben Heywood, of Bury Athletics Club, who crossed the line in 29:23. The first female runner was Melody Dunn in 37:25.

They were presented with trophies, along with the first male and female junior runners.

As well as watching the race, spectators enjoyed fairground rides, a raffle, tombola, cake stalls, beer tent and an ice cream van.

There was also a competition to win a Peugeot 208 car, though the winner has not yet been announced.

Organiser Vicky McLeod, of Lavender Hotels, said: “Everybody did really well. It was a shame about the weather, but it was still a good day. I would like to thank everyone for their donations and help with the event.”

The run has been held annually since 2008 and has raised more than £20,000 for the hospice and the Joe Geeling Trust.
