STUDENTS from Bury are waiting to find out if they have won a prestigious writing competition.

Pupils from St Gabriel’s High School have entered the Manchester Children’s Book Festival competition, “Mother Tongue Other Tongue”, and judging is currently taking place to decide which potential poets and budding writers will be crowned the winners.

The competition was split into two parts. “Mother Tongue” saw children develop a piece of creative writing, poem or song in their mother tongue, while as part of “Other Tongue” native English speakers created a piece in a second language.

More than 550 entries were made in 41 languages and the winners will be announced on June 30, at a free family fun day taking place at Manchester Metropolitan University.
