BURY’S outgoing mayor has handed over the fruits of her year in the chains of office.

Yvonne Creswell, who stepped down from the role last month, donated thousands of pounds to charities and good causes across the borough.

The biggest beneficiaries were Boomerang, a multi-sensory play centre, and Bury Hospice, which both received £3,000.

Cheques worth £1,000 went to mental health organisation Bury Involvement Group and Hurdles, a support group for disabled children and families.

The final £690 was donated to an after-school club at Elms Bank High School in Whitefield.

The money came from fundraising activities held by council staff, civic diners and donations made during the mayoral year.

Mrs Creswell said: “We have done extremely well to raise this money and I’m delighted. Whatever money we can give will make a big difference to these organisations. I wanted to help some of the smaller charities in Bury which don’t get as much recognition.

“I had a wonderful year as mayor and I’m glad these organisations have benefitted.”
