A FORMER mayoress of Tottington celebrated her 100th birthday on Tuesday. And friends and family joined Mrs Edith Hall at the village's Gorsey Clough home for a party to mark the big day.

Mrs Hall is the widow of former Conservative councillor Mr John Hall who served on the old Tottington Urban District Council. He was mayor in 1964-65. Mr Hall, a director of Walshaw-based hauliers David Hall and Sons, died in 1969.

Mrs Hall was born, raised and educated in Tottington and for many years lived in Bury Road. She worked in textiles, including time at Tottington-based cotton mill Joseph Scholes. She has one daughter, Rosemary, two grandsons and three great grandchildren.

In her younger days, she played tennis at the local club. And for many years she was a worshipper at Tottington Methodist Church.

She lived in Harwood, Bolton, before becoming a resident at Gorsey Clough in Harwood Road some 20 years ago.
