England fans in Prestwich hit out at Virgin Media after its television service failed just minutes into the game.

Supporters posted angry messages on Twitter following the fault at 7.55pm yesterday with many claiming to have spent up to an hour on the phone waiting to be put through to the Virgin Media call centre.

The problem continued for the entire duration of the Euro 2012 match against Ukraine which saw England win 1-0 and progress to the Quarter Finals of the tournament.

Virgin Media said the problem was linked to a power failure in Salford and that an investigation into the problem would take place.

It would not comment on the number of homes affected and a spokeswoman said: “A commercial power outage in the Salford area caused some of our customers to miss part of the game.

"We're extremely sorry for the inconvenience caused.”

One Twitter poster, Jimmy Sims, wrote: "The hold music on @virginmedia is Justin Biebe... Is that a ploy to get me to hang up?"
