A LIVE music venue could open in Bury town centre.

Developers have revealed plans to convert a vacant building in Back Broad Street into a licensed premises.

As well as performances from bands, there would also be comedy and spoken-word shows.

A report to Bury Council from Dale Lowe, who is spearheading the plan, says: “The venue will be used for performances by both up-and-coming and established groups from various genres.

“The aim is to give them a smaller-scale taster of what it is like to perform at a purpose-made venue, helping to support and develop local talent, providing a platform for them to progress onto bigger things.”

One half of the venue would have a large hall, a raised stage, a sound system and lighting.

The other half would have toilets, a bar and office and storage space with a cloakroom.

It would open from 8pm to 3am daily, with the bar closing at 2am and live music ending at midnight.

The report added: “There will be no negative impact on neighbours as the surrounding area is purely commercial and any other businesses also open will be bars and restaurants.”

The building was used as Carol Godby Dance Studio until it closed about four years ago when the studio moved to a new base.

If the scheme goes ahead, four part-time jobs and one managerial post would be created.

The building backs on to Read, Franklin and Heywood Music Shop, whose manager Andy Evenson said: “Anything that is promoting Bury and live music is fantastic.

“My gut feeling is that local bands who are trying to do well will feel encouraged by a venue like this.

“In principle it’s a very good idea, but we shall wait to see the detail.”

Ms Lowe has asked the council for permission to change the use of the building and alter the entrance so it can be used as a smoking area and bin store.

The council is aiming to reach a decision by July 24.
