A WELL-known doctor who spent 35 years caring for patients in Bury has died.

Dr Adrian Sims was a consultant anaesthetist at Bury General, Fairfield General and Rossendale hospitals from 1957 until his retirement in 1992.

He was a popular figure and is remembered by many former colleagues at Fairfield.

He died at the hospital on Friday after a long illness, aged 85.

Dr Sims, of Manchester Road, Bury, leaves his wife of 62 years, Nancy, their five children, 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

His son, Peter Sims, aged 51, said: “He was dedicated to his job. He was very proud of it and very conscientious.

“Everyone spoke very highly of him, both patients and other medical staff.”

Dr Sims was born in north London and studied medicine at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, qualifying in 1951.

He worked at various hospitals in Devon, Essex and Suffolk before doing national service from 1954 to 1957.

He then moved to Bury with his family to work in the borough’s hospitals where he remained for the rest of his career.

A funeral will be held at 11am on Friday, June 22 at St Bernadette’s RC Church in Whitefield.
