WE read with concern the letter from Jimmy Hill, chairman of the Pimhole Residents Association.
It is apparent that either he has not grasped the fundamental idea of what a Renewal Area is about or he is trying to make mischief!
As the name suggests it is an area concept.
It is about addressing the inherent decline and deterioration in an area which is demonstrated by the issues such as empty properties and a large percentage of unfit properties in comparison to the surrounding areas (nearly four times).
It is about addressing employment, skills, crime and health issues. It is about regenerating confidence in an area to enable a community to be sustainable. But all this has been explained to Mr Hill.
The council started the Pimhole Renewal Area following extensive consultation with the community.
This was a major factor in the government, through the Secretary of State, finding for the council at the public inquiry into the Compulsory Purchase Order, albeit only a small number of people objected.
The costs for the inquiry, through considerable, are part of the democratic system, but prolonging the process did have a cost on the ground. But all this has been explained to Mr Hill.
Also in terms of East Bury, the council has made major investments in the surrounding area, such as Openshaw Park and the new road leading to the Pimhole breakers yards area.
Another development site is now available at Roach Bank Mill, which will complement the broader area objectives.
This is also one of the reasons why further improvements were made on Heywood Street and Rochdale Road. But again Mr Hill knows this.
We suggest that we ought to be focusing our energy on the next phase of making the vision for Pimhole a reality with further engagement of the community in deciding what Pimhole will look like.
It is an exciting time and a chance to lay the foundations literally and metaphorically for a vibrant, improved and sustainable community with opportunities for everyone in terms of quality of life and living.
Surely, if he really cares about the area, this should be Mr Hill's concern as well.
