I WRITE with utter disgust that Ward 30 at Fairfield General Hospital is to close. My mother was a patient on this ward last year where, unfortunately, she died.

The nursing care received by her while she was on the ward was absolutely fantastic.

The nurses were so professional, and nothing was too much trouble for them. I can't believe this is going to happen. As mentioned in last week's paper, the role of this ward is crucial. Elderly people should get the respect they deserve, and this ward plays an essential part in helping the elderly to live at home independently following a period of illness.

I hope the public feel as compelled as I have to write. These nurses need our support. They work long shifts and are dedicated to what they do.
