I WRITE regarding the notice placed by the NHS (Bury Times, September 28), headed Health Care in Bury is Changing'.
In the paragraph what services will be available at Fairfield Hospital? it is stated that Fairfield will provide acute medicine and an A&E department.
In the following paragraph titled What will be changing at Fairfield?, it is stated that Fairfield will phase out emergency surgery. The question is: what if a seriously hurt person arrives at A&E and needs emergency surgery?
I telephoned the number on the notice and asked that question, pointing out the contradiction. I was given the answer that the casualty would be transferred to another hospital to receive emergency surgery. I then asked whether this was a good idea and it was suggested I speak to someone more qualified. The lady said she would pass on my enquiry, and took my number saying that someone would ring me back. So far that hasn't happened. The contradiction in the notice should be of great concern to residents of the borough, and needs clarifying.
