Coronation Street fans have launched a campaign to save their favourite character Fiz Stape being locked up for a crime she did not commit.

Fiz, played by Bury-born actress Jennie McAlpine, is at the centre of the show’s biggest current storyline.

The flamed-haired actress, who attended the Carol Godby Theatre Workshop in Bury, is set to be charged with three murders on the show on Monday, after unwittingly being connected through her killer husband John.

Father-of-two Nathan Wright, 39, from Jersey launched the campaign ‘FreeFiz’, he said: “I came up with the idea while I was in hospital having an operation on my stomach.

I was watching the show and thought ‘I bet this sparks another Free Deirdre moment’.

“The British hate miscarriages of justice and people will get behind Fiz to stop TV bosses sending her to prison.

“We have an official single, ringtone, T-shirts, mugs and a website.”

A similar campaign took place in 1998 when character Deirdre Barlow was jailed.

In a week the campaign has gathered 1,050 Facebook fans and nearly 700 Twitter followers – and any proceeds raised from the campaign will be donated to Amnesty International.

The IT consultant said: “Jennie and Coronation Street are already following us on Twitter.

“In 1998 Tony Blair backed Deirdre’s campaign, so we are hoping David Cameron will support us.

“Britain is in need of a little bit of fun, and we want to make sure Fiz walks free.”

Fiz’s situation worsened when she found her husband, exhuming the decomposing body of his friend, Colin Fishwick.

He had stolen his identity and disposed of his body after he had a heart attack. He then killed Colin’s mum and former colleague Charlotte when they threatened to out his secret.

Deirdre was imprisoned 13 years ago after a relationship with con man Jon Lindsay.
