BURY Markets traders will be fine tuning their skills to combat criminals.
A total of 23 new hand-held radios have been given out to stallholders at strategic locations in both the indoor and outdoor markets to help police track the movements of known criminals and anyone acting suspiciously. The radios are linked to Mill Gate Shopping Centre's existing communications network and CCTV station.
Market holders have received special police training to help them learn what to look out for and how to confront crime.
The radios cost £4,500 and were purchased with funding from the Greater Manchester High Sheriff Police Trust.
Sergeant Richard Pendlebury, who heads up the town centre team, said: "This month-long operation is just one of a host of crime crackdowns which we have planned to ensure that Bury stays a safe place to shop."
