A PENSIONER was left shocked when a car ploughed into her home.

Irene Roscoe has now been landed with a huge clean-up bill after the Citroen Saxo came off the road in Brandlesholme Road, Bury, and smashed into her lounge.

Mrs Roscoe was asleep upstairs in the semi-detached house when the crash happened at 1.40am on Saturday.

Mrs Roscoe, aged 82, who has lived in the house for more than 40 years, said: “I honestly couldn’t believe it. Things were strewn all over the floor and there was glass everywhere. I’m just thankful nobody was injured, I didn’t want any deaths. It could have been a lot worse.”

The car smashed through the garden metal gates and embedded itself in the wall, damaging a television, DVD player, bay window, tables, vases and ornaments, some of which Mrs Roscoe said were irreplaceable family pieces.

The total cost of the damage is yet to be calculated, but Mrs Roscoe, who is insured, said it is likely to be thousands of pounds.

She said: “It didn’t really hit me at the time, I was just shocked.

“It hit me more in the morning and when I looked in the front room it was awful.”

Her daughter, Liz McElhinney, said: “She is staying with us now because it’s not safe to stay at her house. She is really shocked.”

The lounge window was boarded up and a structural engineer visited the house to assess the damage and ensure it was safe to live in.

Roy Grundy, watch commander at Bury Fire Station, said: “We cordoned off the scene and isolated the car’s battery and checked no pipes were ruptured.”

l Stephen Johnson, aged 26, of Walshaw Road, Bury, has been charged with drink-driving and driving without due care and attention. He is due to appear at Bury Magistrates’ Court on June 22.
