EDUCATION bosses have unveiled the latest plans to improve Bury Grammar School.
Last month, school leaders were given permission to build a sixth form centre on the girls’ school campus off Bridge Road.
Now they want to demolish a classroom block on the same site and build a three-storey art centre in its place.
The school’s project director, Peter Skinner, has applied to Bury Council for permission to press ahead with the work and, if it is granted, the new building would open in late 2012.
The application form said the existing classroom block, which contains a French room, two computer rooms and an office, has been earmarked for demolition due to a number of severe structural defects rendering the building unsafe for use.
It added: “The new art centre is to provide English and science classrooms, a music rehearsal room including five practice rooms, a new library and resource area and office accommodation.
“The atrium will provide an exhibition space to display students’ artwork, designs and projects.”
The art centre would interconnect with the new sixth form centre.
The school currently has 320 parking spaces, which would be unchanged.
Bury Council aims to rule by September 2.
