I AM a resident of Holcombe Avenue, Bury, and I am in total agreement with SM Warburton’s letter (May 26).
I have a copy of the Morris Homes plan which was dated 2008 entitled “Elton Vale Habitat Creation Works”.
In this plan they wanted a public footpath running through from Newbold Street up to the bridge where their new housing development is currently under way.
It also mentions redirecting the stream, thinning of trees etc. They made it sound as if this would attract wildlife. That stretch of land is already teeming with wildlife, much of it protected by law.
Now we hear that Diggle Lane Allotments committee wants to do exactly the same with money they hope to get from the Big Lottery Fund and Veridor landfill company. We have not heard this from the committee but from our own investigations. The committee knows the nearest residents are against it but still they continue. They say it is a derelict tip but I would not have bought a house near a tip, nor would residents have lived here for 40 or 50 years, if it was so unsightly. It is unsafe for a public footpath as it is dark and secluded. What will this attract for residents at night?
We want a proper explanation from the council which owns the land as to just who is behind this underhand and secretive scheme.
