ASPIRING cyclist Ryan Whatmough swapped his wheels for a supermarket trolley when he joined colleagues at Asda in Bury to celebrate the store’s new look.

Ryan and the Asda team at Spring Street unveiled a £1.7 million makeover, including wider aisles.

A new George department and a new pharmacy, which will also offer free health checks, have also been installed.

Ryan is being “adopted” by the Bury store and provided with a £500 donation for training and equipment, as one of the region’s brightest young cycling hopefuls.

He will benefit from the support of SportsAid and the Asda Sporting Chance scheme.

Players from Northern Thunder netball team were also in attendance, and they received a £300 donation from the store to thank them for their support of the re-launch.

Captain Karen Greig and players Jade Clark, Jodie Gibson and Alexa Collier all received health checks at the pharmacy and shared some tips with Ryan on what it is like to compete in sport at their level.

Store manager Ian Streziker said: “There has been a real buzz in store during the final stages of the improvement, so it was great to have Ryan and Northern Thunder here to add to the party atmosphere.”
