AN INVESTIGATION has been launched into the death of a young Ramsbottom mother who fell ill just nine days after giving birth.
Hayley Constable, aged 27, died after her Caesarean section wound became infected and complications set in.
Her condition quickly deteriorated and she died on April 22 when a blood clot travelled to her brain.
It was less than four weeks after the birth of her son, Alfie, who weighed 7lb 13oz when he was born at Fairfield General Hospital on March 27.
Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs Fairfield, is now trying to find out what happened.
A spokesman for the trust said: “This is a very sad case and we offer our sincere condolences to the family of Miss Constable. We are unable to comment further, as the coroner is currently investigating the case.
“The clinical staff at the trust are also carrying out a review.”
Hayley, of Bolton Street, had always dreamed of becoming a mum and had undergone a healthy pregnancy.
Alfie was born when doctors did an emergency Caesarean section after a long labour.
They were both discharged from hospital the following day.
An inquest into Hayley’s death was opened and adjourned on May 9.
Her funeral was being held at 11am today at St Paul’s Church in Bridge Street, Ramsbottom, followed by interment at Ramsbottom Cemetery at 12.30pm.
