A HEALTHY young woman who dreamed of becoming a mum died less than one month after giving birth to her son.
Hayley Constable, aged 27, died after her Caesarean section wound became infected and complications set in— just four weeks after the birth of 7lb 13oz Alfie at Fairfield General Hospital on March 27. Hayley, of Bolton Street, Ramsbottom, was surrounded by her family when she died on April 22.
Her mother Anne Constable, of Brierfield Drive, Walmersley, said: “The whole family is still in shock. Obviously people get infections all the time, but you don’t expect this to happen to a healthy young woman. Hayley wanted to have a baby so much. It’s heart-breaking to think she only had a week with Alfie, but it was the happiest she had ever been.
“She loved being a mother. She was so pleased with Alfie and very proud. She loved having her own little family. It was all she had ever wanted.”
Hayley’s sister, Sarah Constable, aged 29, said: “Hayley was always very maternal. She loved being an auntie to my children and couldn’t wait to have her own.
“She had always wanted to be a mum. Having Alfie was a dream come true for her.”
Hayley had been delighted when she became pregnant in July 2010, five months after suffering a miscarriage. In March Doctors had to carry out an emergency Caesarean section, as it was a long labour.
Hayley was given antibiotics for a mild infection and both she and Alfie were discharged.
Baby Alfie settled into life with his mum and dad, Martin Fitzpatrick.
But a week later, the wound had become infected. Hayley became very ill and was transferred to North Manchester General Hospital where Hayley was taken to intensive care. The infection had caused her lungs to become inflamed, so a few days later Hayley was taken to a specialist respiratory unit in Leicester.
She then developed a blood clot which spread to her brain.
Hayley, a former pupil at Springside Primary School and Derby High School, worked for an insurance claims company.
She met Martin two years ago through a mutual friend. Mrs Constable said the couple were “made for each other” and had talked about getting married.
Martin said: “Hayley was the kindest, most loving, genuine person I have ever met. We were so in love and knew we would be together forever. She was so looking forward to being a mum and was amazing with our son in the short time she spent with him. Hayley will always be in my heart and our son will always know what a brilliant mother and person she was.”
An inquest will be held into Hayley’s death. Hayley’s family have asked for donations in her memory for a trust fund for Alfie. Contact Kavanagh & Coates Funeral Services.
