COUNCILLORS are elected to represent the interests of all the electorate in their ward, irrespective of the individual voter's political persuasion.
The Tottington councillors deserve congratulations and thanks from the community for the action they have taken when faced with measures imposed by the owners of the Robin Hood public house car park.
Clearly, the community is of little interest to them unless it is pouring money into their coffers. It is prudent and in the real interest of the community that the councillors lead the campaign to persuade Greene King Brewery to restore the car park status quo, before it so arrogantly violated the tranquillity of Tottington village life.
I do hope that their initiative meets with success.
Nevertheless, it is a very real possibility that the community is going to be permanently deprived of its free use of its major car park which had, hitherto, been maintained by the council. So, consideration will have to be given to an alternative for the provision of adequate parking.
Putting on my Lib Dem hat to be constructive, I would suggest that the council investigate the cost of extending the car park at Harwood Crescent, and the construction of a pedestrian footpath from it to Tottington Medical Centre.
Before long the latter's parking arrangements will be full to capacity, and this will have a detrimental effect upon the functioning of the centre.
David H Foss, Tottington
