THE alarms bells have sounded for the last time for a popular Bury fireman.
Watch manager Paul Myerscough has helped save thousands of lives and properties during a career spanning 31 years which came to an end this morning as he completed his final shift.
Paul, who celebrated his 50th birthday on Tuesday, initially trained as an electrical engineer with Norweb before deciding to enlist with the fire service on September 15, 1975.
He completed three months training in Manchester and started at Salford Fire Station. Five years later he was promoted to leading fireman. Paul went to Bolton North Fire Station for two years as a sub-officer, spent 12 years as a station officer at Heywood and has been at The Rock fire station in Bury for the last 10 years The father-of-three said: "Thankfully, there have been far more highlights than there has been lowlights.
"The Woolworth fire in Manchester in 1979 in which several people died, was horrific.
"Yet, for every tragedy there has been a thousand good incidents where people have not lost their lives.
"The fire service is going through a lot of changes but I would still recommend the job to any young girl or boy who wants a rewarding career."
Paul has recently moved to North Wales and intends to enjoy his retirement sailing, fishing and cycling.
He added: "For me, being a fireman has always been a hobby that pays me a wage.
" Today will be a sad day."
