I WAS impressed by a report that police in Cheshire have mounted a hi-tech "sting" operation to catch car thieves. Miniature cameras, hidden in immobilised cars, will photograph anyone who attempts to break in.

Apparently, such operations have been very successful elsewhere. Maybe one day then, with such technology, we might see an end to car crime.

However, as much as I value my car, if it does get pinched, it's not the end of the world.

Not so though, if I get rammed off my bicycle by a driver ignoring the mobile phone ban. How beneficial might camera technology be if it were adapted to catch these threats to life and limb?

Despite all warnings, and the deaths caused by mobile menaces, the problem seems to be getting worse. Go out for an hour - on bicycle, or in a car - and you will very likely see more than a dozen drivers (car, van, bus, lorry) using a hand held mobile (talking or texting).

With pretty much everything and every other person - from home to airport - being protected by hi-tech wizardry, why should cyclists miss out?

Forget the car, I want the hi-tech camera on the back of my bicycle.
