IN the blog he published just prior to last year’s General Election, the then prospective Conservative candidate, David Nuttall, wrote of a visit by the then Shadow Health Secretary, Andrew Lansley.

Two things from that blog stick out. Firstly, Mr, Lansley is quoted saying: “If I am Secretary of State for Health after the election, maternity and children’s services will be maintained at Fairfield and I will ensure this happens.”

Mr Lansley, when you looked in the shaving mirror this morning, you looked at the Secretary of State for Health. Secondly, Mr Nuttall told the local electorate: “The choice for voters in Bury North is clear: Vote Labour and these services will be axed from Fairfield. Vote Conservative and if there is a Conservative government, the maternity department will be kept open.”

Mr Nuttall, before you say it, I don’t think a mealy-mouthed excuse of this being a Coalition government will get you off the hook. That’s not relevant. You made a quite categoric statement with neither ifs nor buts. Now your government has confirmed the unit’s closure, what do you have to say for yourself? What do you have to say to us, the voters?
