SUNNYBANK Community Centre is now providing new facilities for people with learning disabilities and the wider community after undergoing a refurbishment.
Bury Council’s adult care service carried out the work at the Sunny Bank Road centre which is the first new core base in the learning disabilities day services modernisation programme.
Bury mayor, Councillor John Byrne, carried out the official opening ceremony.
The centre currently supports 14 people with a learning disability who use it as their base during the day. It also operates as a centre for the wider community.
New fitted facilities include disabled accessible toilets, kitchen and dining area, office space, a sensory room and a smaller lounge area on top of the large main hall. It is regularly hired at weekends and evenings for parties, and it is hoped more people and groups from the local community will start to use the facilities.
One such group is “Zumba” dance and fitness classes for women which already take place at the centre from 8pm to 9pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Instructor Dianne Mehr said: “Many people don’t like exercise but they love Zumba. It’s for anyone of any age or ability.”
