2011 is the European Year of the Volunteer and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service are appealing to people across Greater Manchester to join their team of volunteers.
Known as the Community Action Team the volunteers play an important role in a wide range of activities from playing casualties in training exercises to helping find people who need a free Home Fire Risk Assessment.
Community Action Team volunteer Jane McClean said: “Volunteering has given me the opportunity to get out into my local community and be part of something that truly helps people. No matter what kind of day I have had, helping people lifts my spirits and makes me feel good. If anyone is thinking about volunteering Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service is a great place to do it.”
Volunteers are asked to donate just 16 hours a month and can choose what activities to take part in to fit around existing commitments such as jobs and child care. All volunteers are fully supported and receive training and any help needed to become a successful volunteer.
The Community Action Team are hosting an open day this Sunday, February 13 at Bury Fire Station, The Rock, Bury, BL9 5AH where people can find out more about volunteering, meet members of the team and have the opportunity to ask questions. There will also be a Road Traffic Collision demonstration at 11.30am and 14.30pm on each day to give people an insight into the important role of a volunteer.
