A hoax caller telephoned police claiming to have dumped a baby outside an office in Bury.
Police were put on a major alert and scoured Bury town centre in search of the newborn baby.
The woman, who spoke with an African accent, said the baby was outside a Citizen's Advice Bureau.
A baby was not found and police - who spent hundreds of man hours on the search - said the woman may be in need of medical help.
The call was made on February and the woman tells the operator: "I want to tell you that I have dumped the baby at Bury Citizens Advice Bureau."
She says the baby is hers.
Supt Graeme Openshaw, of Bury police, said: "After a large amount of police work we are now convinced this was a hoax call. I want to reassure people that we do not believe a baby has been abandoned in these circumstances."
Call police on 0161 872 5050 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if you recognise her voice.
