Police are appealing for the mother of a two-week-old baby to get in touch after she called the emergency services in distress.
The woman, who had an African accent, called 999 yesterday afternoon and told the call handler she had left a baby outside the Citizen's Advice Bureau, in Bury.
Officers have searched the local area, much of town centre and have visited all branches of the Citizen's Advice Bureau across Greater Manchester to no avail.
Officers are now making a direct appeal to the woman to get in touch so her welfare and that of the baby can be verified.
Superintendent Graeme Openshaw, of Bury police, said: "I want to make a direct plea to this mother that we are only interested in the safety of the baby and simply want to hear back from her.
"If you are reading or hearing this then please call us - you are not in trouble, we just want to help you and your baby as best we can.
"We are also appealing to anyone who knows of a friend, relative or neighbour who has recently had a baby in difficult circumstances to get in touch."
Police are appealing for any members of the public who have any information regarding this incident or the mother to make contact with the police on 0161 872 5050.
