VIRIDOR wants to increase the volume of waste at its Pilsworth South landfill site.
The company has submitted a planning application to Bury Council for a “vertical and lateral” extension within the existing site boundary.
Viridor held a two-day public consultation and separate stakeholder briefing presentation at Pilsworth Power Plant Education Centre in November, with fairly low levels of interest from local residents. A site community liaison meeting the same month also attracted few people.
The company said Pilsworth South is an important strategic minerals and waste disposal site serving Bury and the wider Greater Manchester area. Through the capture of methane gas, the site currently produces 3.5mw of renewable power which is sent to the national grid.
Viridor says that, to continue to provide non-hazardous waste disposal in Greater Manchester, additional cap-acity is required at Pilsworth South Landfill.
The firm proposes to modify the existing planning consent to accommodate an additional 1.8 million metres cubed of landfill capacity, for the disposal of non-recyclable residual waste.
This will extend the life of the site by up to five years.
