TWO teenage girls from Bury are going it alone after earning their wings.

Corporal Nicola Lees and Cadet Cassie Horner are both members of the 1036 (Bury) Squadron Air Cadets and have successfully completed a flying training course allowing them to fly solo.

Ironically, neither can drive a car yet because they are both under 17.

Nicola, a student at Holy Cross College, has just completed her A-level exams, while Cassie is awaiting her GCSE results from Elton High school. Both girls said that flying solo was the "greatest high in the world" and "absolutely fantastic".

The duo had to undergo ground school training, flying training, written exams, a flying test, followed by a ten-minute solo flight.

They must now carry out another five solos to achieve their advanced training certificates, and potentially progress to become instructors themselves one day.
