A HARD-WORKING volunteer who helps people in need has been named Bury’s Woman Of The Year 2010.
Shaheena Haroon takes in homeless families and supports them until they are settled.
She also helps women who have suffered domestic violence, mentors and befriends them, and acts as an interpreter.
She works with the council, police and fire service and is a key member of Bury Asian Women’s Centre.
Shaheena was given the title this afternoon during a ceremony at the Bolholt Country Park Hotel, held in aid of Bury Hospice.
Judges named her both the overall winner and the winner of the volunteering category.
Separate awards were given to Paula Lau, who won the section for businesswomen, and carer Karen Prue.
Paula runs the Man Yuen restaurant in Tottington and regularly allows charities and other organisations to use the venue for fundraising events.
As well as working as a personal assistant, Karen raises money for Support Dogs, a charity which trains dogs to help people with different kinds of disabilities.
