IT really was rocking on The Rock on Friday as hundreds of people tried to get into the Guinness Book of World Records.
For they showed off their musical talent in an attempt to get the most people ever playing air guitar in unison.
People of all ages gathered in St John’s Square, outside the new Debenhams store, with plectrums at the ready.
They were led by Bury actor Gemma Atkinson as they rocked out to a megamix of songs by bands including Queen, The White Stripes and Kasabian.
Despite their best efforts, they failed to get into the record books. The existing record stands at 1,844 people.
But the attempt was still a hit with the crowds of people who took part.
Ian Salwa, aged 50, from Bury, said: “It was great fun. It is disappointing that we didn’t break the record, but I still had a brilliant time.”
Steven Waddington, aged 28, from Whitefield, said: “I think this has been brilliant. It was exciting to take part in a world record attempt.”
Ex-Hollyoaks actor Gemma said: “I really enjoyed the air guitar. I was a bit nervous at first, but when the crowd got going it was good. There was a great atmosphere.
“It’s a shame that we didn’t break the record, but maybe we can come back on the first anniversary and try again.”
