In relation to the news that Bury Council has granted £50,000 for the restoration and clean-up of Radcliffe Tower.

The basis for this decision is that the Tower is a heritage site and it is hoped that doing it up will encourage more tourists to come to Radcliffe.

I am not saying that we should leave the Tower to rot but it has already been there for several hundreds of years and waiting a few more years to invest in it is not going to do any harm.

Whilst on the other hand if the Civic Suite does not get the investment it needs then it might not be here in 12 months and a huge piece of Radcliffe’s heritage will be lost forever.

Both these unique Radcliffe attractions should be treated the same.

Radcliffe Civic Suite is also a site of local historical and architectural importance and has been assessed for Grade II Listed building status. It is in the heart of Radcliffe Town Centre and is equally as worthy of the same investment as the Tower.

The money could be used to enhance the suite’s grounds, and establish it as a premier banqueting and conference centre as well as the number one wedding venue. This will also encourage more people to come to Radcliffe, which would be a boost for its residents and more importantly for local business.

In its present predicament with the council looking at alternative business models, this much loved community facility’s future is still in the balance.

What’s the next idea going to be, closing down Radcliffe altogether and moving us all to Bury?

Radcliffe residents have signed a petition to keep Radcliffe Civic Suite open.

Councillors please take note — it’s our money and our votes.
