A NEW drinking venue is prompting calls for CCTV cameras in Whitefield.

An application for a provisional licence was granted to proprietors of new bar Boulevard, in Higher Lane, to serve alcohol until 2am on certain nights.

However, nearby residents are concerned the late-night drinking will create problems.

Mr Tony Murphy, of Higher Lane, raised the issue of CCTV at Whitefield and Unsworth area board after his car had been vandalised numerous times.

Insp David Jones said he had made a bid for cameras in Whitefield in the past but was turned down as crime was not considered high enough to warrant funding for CCTV.

Mr Murphy's wife, Teresa, reiterated the need for cameras in light of the licence for Boulevard being granted last week.

She said the owner had told her that some clients may wish to leave their cars overnight on Higher Lane car park, which was used by residents of Higher Lane flats and shops in Fountain Place.

Mr Murphy said: "This is additional information for a CCTV bid. It is our cars and our safety that we are concerned about. "

Boulevard applicant Elizabeth Morris aims to open the venue as a coffee house during the day, incorporating a family room and selling cards and gifts.

By night, the venue will become a nightclub, serving alcohol and providing live music on occasions.

The club, which will be situated in the former Learn Direct shop, will have its own CCTV cameras and Ms Morris has agreed the use of the Khan Saab restaurant car park, next door.
