ENVIRONMENTALLY-friendly pupils at Summerseat Methodist School have taken top prize and the Gold Oak title in the Bury Yellow Woods Challenge.

The youngsters were awarded £300 after collecting 668 old Yellow Pages directories to recycle and achieved the best recycling rate of 6.36 per pupil in Bury.

For every pound awarded to schools, Yellow Pages give a matching pound to the Woodland's Trust's Tree For All campaign which aims to plant a tree for every child in the UK.

Guardian Angels RC Primary School, in Leigh Lane, Bury, took the Silver Birch runner up certificate and £200, while Old Hall Primary School in Springside View, Bury, took third place winning £100 and the Bronze Beech certificate.

The three top schools have also been awarded native tree saplings along with Christ Church CE Primary School, in Church Street, Walshaw, Peel Brow School in Fir Street, Ramsbottom, and St Andrews CE Primary School, in Bolton Street, Ramsbottom, for coming in fourth, fifth and sixth places respectively.

Councillor John Byrne, Bury Council's executive member for environment and transport, said: "I'd like to thank all the schoolchildren, teachers and communities that took on our first Yellow Woods Challenge and made it such a success. Forty schools took part and collected a total of 5,060 old Yellow Pages directories which have been recycled into card and animal bedding by C&C Recycling in Bury."

All participating schools will now join around 1,800 others in the Yellow Woods Challenge 2006 UK Finals where schools can win cash prizes of up to £2,000.

Richard Duggleby, head of external relations with Yell, the publisher of Yellow Pages, said: "This is a tremendous achievement by schools in Bury and shows how interested children are in recycling and looking after the environment. We couldn't run the challenge without the local authority and recycling company and I thank them for their continued support and commitment."
