ANOTHER “accolade” was heaped on hit band Elbow when they were the subject of the South Bank Show.
The Sunday night ITV1 programme charted the five-strong group’s rise from their roots in Prestwich and Whitefield to their current status as one of the most acclaimed bands in the world.
Presenter Melvyn Bragg interviewed lead singer Guy Garvey about their formation 19 years ago, their long battle to secure a recording deal and the words and thoughts behind some of their most notable compositions.
Also featuring interviews with the other band members, Craig and Mark Potter, Pete Turner and Richard Jupp, the programme was interspersed with clips from their recent performance at the MEN Arena.
The band originally met up at Stand College in Whitefield. Following the runaway success of their album, “Seldom Seen Kid”, they became Freemen of the Borough earlier this year, alongside film director Danny Boyle and paralympian Zoe Robinson.
Melvyn Bragg revealed that Paul McCartney was the first musical focus of his series 30 years ago, and that Elbow would be his last.
