THE mosque came to the synagogue last week for a tour organised by Salam Shalom — Bury’s Muslim-Jewish Forum.
Sixty Muslim guests from the Noor ul-Islam Mosque in Bury learned about the finer points of Judaism from Rabbi Jonathan Guttentag and Michael Williams of the Whitefield Synagogue.
The group toured the synagogue and visited the ritual baths (mikvah) and enjoyed refreshments in the succah. The succah is a booth with an open ceiling covered with leaves, and is erected as part of the festival of Succot celebrations.
Salam Shalom co-chairman Hassanat Ahmed said: “The large turnout is proof of the success of the building of trust in our communities since the forum was established over five years ago.”
Rabbi Guttentag agreed: “This is the first time we have welcomed a group of Muslims to the synagogue. It can only be a positive step.”
A reciprocal visit to the Noor ul-Islam Mosque was taking place this week.
