CONSERVATIVE leader David Cameron and other high-flying party members have been making a beeline for Radcliffe this week.
Their destination has been Radcliffe Girls’ and Boys’ Club which is undergoing a major renovation project initiated by local Tory members.
Mr Cameron took a tour of the youth centre in Withins Avenue on Sunday and spent 30 minutes playing pool and table football and talking to youngsters and volunteers.
Marj Earnshaw, club leader, said: “Mr Cameron spent a lot of time with the children. He was very encouraging with the younger children in particular. The kids seemed to like meeting him.”
Mr Cameron visited the club to see the work being undertaken there as part of a social action project.
Over the past few months, the centre has been transformed with walls painted, rubbish cleared out, windows and doors replaced, and the garden cleared.
Dozens of volunteers took a break from the Conservative Party conference in Manchester this week to help with the work at the club.
Among them was Shadow Foreign Secretary, William Hague, who spent two hours digging in the garden on Monday, Shadow Home Secretary, Chris Grayling, and Shadow Health Secretary, Andrew Lansley.
Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, Shadow Minister for Community Cohesion and Social Action, has visited the club several times to pitch in.
She said: “I visited the club at the beginning of the work and have seen it progress. The whole building looks so different now. Members of the party will carry on working with the club to make sure it goes from strength to strength.”
A celebration of the work already done at the club was held last night, with Mr Cameron’s wife, Samantha, and party chairman, Eric Pickles, among those expected to attend.
