A ONCE thriving Ramsbottom pub that was an annual magnet for game fowl enthusiasts may be converted into 10 flats.
The Old Dun Horse Hotel, at the junction of Bolton Street and Dundee Street, was built by Thwaites Brewery in the 1920s and held Ye Olde Gamecock Show each New Year’s Day up until last year.
Organised by the Holcombe Old English Game Fowl Club, it is said to be the oldest show of its kind anywhere in the world, dating back to 1843.
Thwaites closed the pub in June 2008, so this year’s event had to be held at the Royal British Legion in Central Street, Ramsbottom.
Gloucestershire-based Castle Properties said the building, which falls within Ramsbottom conservation area, cannot reopen as a pub.
Instead, it has applied to Bury Council for permission to convert it into eight one-bedroom apartments, a two-bedroom apartment and a studio. It would be served by five parking spaces.
A Castle Properties spokesman said: “There is no realistic prospect of it reopening as a pub.
“The licensed trade is in decline with people’s changing habits and competition from supermarkets.
“The pub is not in a position where it is an essential community facility and there are numerous other public houses within a few minutes’ walk.
“Although neglected, the building is generally in sound condition and is capable of reuse with minimal repairs. It is important that the building is preserved.”
The council has provided details of the application to 37 neighbours.
People have until October 22 to write to the council with their views.
The council is aiming to reach a decision before the end of December.
