HUNDREDS of people travelled back in time for a Wartime Weekend — for the second time this year.
Enactors dressed up in vintage 1940s military and civilian attire to enjoy a host of attractions along the East Lancashire Railway (ELR).
Visitors of all ages gathered for events being held at Bolton Street Station in Bury, Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall on Saturday and Sunday.
It was the second wartime extravaganza following the 11th annual event held over the May bank holiday.
Ex-military vehicles were on show, including a 55-tonne Centurion battle tank which took up position in Ramsbottom’s Tesco car park on Sunday.
David Hill, one of the organisers, said: “We had tremendous problems but right at the last minute we managed to get the tank in through Edenfield and Stubbins and under the bridge. The whole of Railway Bottom was awash with people and everyone was cheering.”
One couple, Mike Andrews and Elizabeth Lackenby, decided to hold a mock wartime wedding in St Paul’s Church, Ramsbottom, on Saturday.
The Ramsbottom Rhythm and Blues festival, which was held over the weekend, did not affect the number of visitors.
Mr Hill added: “Some pubs were playing 40s music and some blues. It’s nice to bring people together and it is great for the town.
“We were a bit dubious about holding a second event but it was a success.”
