A man was airlifted to hospital after his car overturned on the motorway near Bury.
A 50-year-old man was travelling northbound on the M66 in a silver Mercedes at 12.50pm on Sunday September 27.
Just after junction 1 at Ramsbottom, the car left the motorway, went on to the grass verge and collided with a concrete pillar that supports the footbridge above.
The car overturned and ended up on its roof in lane one of the motorway.
Officers attended along with the other emergency services.
The driver was taken to hospital with serious head and spine injuries but his condition is not thought to be life threatening.
The northbound section of the motorway was closed at junction 1 until about 4pm.
Officers investigating the collision are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision to come forward.
