RICKY Hatton is trying to tie up a title eliminator fight for Bury’s rising star Scott Quigg.
The Hitman, who manages the 20-year-old super-bantamweight through his new venture Hatton Promotions, believes his protegè is ready to make the step up to the next level.
Quigg, who has a 100 per cent record from 14 fights, is back in action tomorrow night against Georgian Kakhaber Avetisian at Manchester Velodrome — and a good showing could see him land an elimination bout.
“We are very pleased with Scott’s progress and we are confident we will get him an elimination fight for either the British or Commonwealth title before the end of the year,” said Hatton.
“He is an exciting come-forward fighter with a large following.”
Quigg has recently returned from a stint in the Hollywood hills at the world famous Wildcard gym and he believes that experience, combined with some explosive showings in the ring, has given him the belief to take the next step.
“It’s good that people think I am ready to push on,” said Quigg, who trains under Brian Hughes MBE at Collyhurst and Moston Lads Club. “But I have got to keep showing I are ready.
“I am itching to fight again now and I have been working on a few little things in the gym. I have been tightening up my defence and working on the little things like making sure I am hitting cleanly and crisply.
“I did most of the hard work in America and it’s a case of being ready for the fight now by tweaking a few things.”
Quigg took his recent trip to Freddie Roach’s gym to further his development and he believes it was worth every penny as he sparred against some of the top Mexican, Cuban and American boxers in the States.
“It was a great experience,” said Quigg, whose fight is being screened by Sky Sports tomorrow night. “I sparred with some top fighters and coaches and I held my own.
“I got some feedback and it was good to pick up things from just watching other people.”
