BURY’S very own talking newspaper is the last word when it comes to keeping people with sight problems up to date with local news.

And Bury Pipeline was visited by the borough’s deputy mayor, Councillor Peter Ashworth, in an event to mark Talking Newspaper Week.

The sterling work of Bury Pipeline was celebrated during the national event which sought to recognise the efforts of more than 400 talking newspapers throughout the UK.

Each week, thanks to a dedicated band of volunteers, Bury Pipeline produces and circulates newsy CDs to more than 250 visually impaired people throughout the borough. Items are sourced from the Bury Times Group of newspapers as well as other publications.

During his visit to Seedfield Resource Centre in Parkinson Street, the deputy mayor was able to view some of the tasks involved in producing the CDs.

Chairman Mrs Jean Spencer said: “This service is run by volunteers and is free of charge.

“We are funded by donations from various sources and postage is free thanks to the Articles for the Blind concession provided by the Royal Mail.”
