A REGISTRAR and former librarian who lived in Ramsbottom for 90 years has died.
Mona Hall was known by many in the town where she worked as a registrar of births, deaths and marriages.
Born in 1919, she attended Haslingden Grammar School after becoming the first ever pupil from Holcombe School to win a scholarship.
In the 1940s she was assistant librarian in Ramsbottom and later became deputy superintendent registrar for Bury from 1974 to 1979.
Her son John Hall said she was “a well known local character, liked for her helpfulness and gentle, but authoritative sense of decorum”.
Mrs Hall and her husband Billy married in 1940 and, along with their nephew, they set up Holcombe Brook and District Recorded Music Society.
She became the society’s honorary president after Billy’s death in 1997 and was also a founder of Ramsbottom Soroptomists. She remained a keen member until her death and served as president in 1961 and 1973.
Mr Hall, who now lives in the West Midlands added: “She was well liked and respected by all who knew her. She remained in reasonable health until two years ago, and saw in her 90th birthday last May and the birth of her first great granddaughter in June.”
Mrs Hall spent her last few years in Hewlett Court, Holcombe Brook, and died in Fairfield General Hospital on September 6.
She leaves behind her son, three grandchildren and a great granddaughter.
