BURY Council will not hold another mayoral referendum — despite plans to shake up local government.
All local authorities must decide between two styles of leadership by the end of the year.
They can either choose to be run by an elected mayor, similar to Boris Johnson in London or Ray “Robocop” Mallon in Middlesbrough, or have a more powerful council leader and executive, who would have to be elected by councillors.
But Bury cannot decide to have a mayor because residents have already voted against the idea, in a referendum last year.
Rules mean that it will be several years before another mayoral referendum can be held in the borough.
A consultation on the plans to have a more powerful council leader and cabinet will be held before the end of the year.
