FOOTBALL yobs who rioted in Bury town centre have been banned from attending matches in England and Wales.
The six were given the “Matchday Asbos” after getting involved in a large disturbance in Silver Street last August.
The Rochdale supporters had travelled to Humberside to watch their team play Grimsby Town. but were refused entry.
They decided instead to go to watch their local rivals Bury, who were playing at home.
Fans from both clubs clashed in the street, sparking ugly scenes.
Officers from Rochdale’s football intelligence unit identified a number of people involved in the disturbance and took civil action against them.
At Rochdale Magistrates’ Court this week, all six received a three-year banning order.
They were Matthew Knowles, aged 22, of Falkland Avenue, Rochdale; Courtney Alfrey, aged 19, of Crossgates Road, Milnrow; Luke Spencer, aged 17 of Thrum Hall Lane, Shawclough; Alec Henderson, aged 18, of Ings Lane, Rochdale; Aidan Hartley, aged 18, of Halifax Road, Littleborough; and Lee Scott Doran, aged 32 of Dunbarton Drive, Heywood.
The order prevents the group from attending any regulated football game in England and Wales, and from going to any town or city on a day when Rochdale are playing. They have also been banned from the area surrounding Rochdale’s Spotland stadium on matchdays.
PC Russ Lee, of Rochdale's football intelligence unit, said: “This is a great result for us. This group get together on matchdays with the sole aim of causing trouble.
“The behaviour of these people gives true football fans a bad name and they are a disgrace to the vast majority of peaceful and genuine fans who simply want to enjoy the matches.
“I hope our success in this case goes some way to warning other people who feel this kind of behaviour is acceptable, that it’s not and there will be consequences for actions like this.”
