A man has lost an ear in an attack in Bury.
Just before 5.45am today, the 26-year-old victim was walking to work on Badger Street, Bury, when he was assaulted.
The victim lost an ear in the attack and also suffered cuts to the back of his head and arms.
He was taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment to his injuries, which are not believed to be life threatening.
Officers searched the surrounding area but have not been able to trace the victim's ear.
Although the police are still trying to establish the motive for the assault, officers do not believe that this was a random attack.
Detective Inspector Sarah Jackson of Bury CID said: "This was an extremely nasty assault on a man who was simply walking to work.
"He has now been left without an ear and we need to find the person or people responsible.
"We are appealing to anyone who may have been in the area and who may have seen something that can help us trace the vicious thugs who committed this crime."
