MIKE Cresswell’s book of West Pennine Walks describes many good walks in the area, and Brenda Wheatley chose one for our walk on August 9.

Starting from Botany Bay, that well-known landmark by the M61, we headed for White Coppice, where we stopped for coffee by the cricket ground, a lovely spot on a summer day.

After a rocky path through head-high bracken, we climbed through woodland and then down a lane to Brinscall.

A futher climb took us past Pikelow Farm, with views of the coastline from Liverpool to Black Combe near Barrow in Furness.

Next we passed through Withnel Fold, with its village stocks, and on to the towpath of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, which we followed back to Botany Bay On Sunday, Mike Case (0161 766 1525) leads a strenuous 18-mile walk in the Yorkshire dales, “Mastiles Lane”, meet 8.30am at Bury Interchange car park.

Annie Meighan (01204 886404) leads an easier nine to 10- miler in Calderdale, “Gauxhholme to Gorpley”, meet at the same venue at 9am.

Tickets are still available for our coach trip to Wensleydale on August 23.
